Power BI on Apple Silicon Processor with UTM

Are you looking for a way to run Power BI on your Apple Silicon processor? Look no further! In this article, we will walk you through setting up Power BI on Apple Silicon processor in an alternative way using UTM.

Step 1: Adjust RAM and CPU Cores

The first step is to adjust the amount of RAM and CPU cores you need. This will ensure that your system has enough resources to run Power BI smoothly.

Step 2: Create a New Machine with UTM

Next, open the UTM application and click on 'Create a New Machine'. Browse to the ISO file built from the above step and select it. Wait for several minutes as this process takes some time (it took around 23 minutes in my case).

Step 3: Download Windows UUP

After creating the new machine, you will get the Windows ISO file. Extract the downloaded ZIP file and open terminal. Change directory to the extracted folder and run `uup_download_macos.sh` with the following command: `sh uup_download_macos.sh`.

Step 4: Install QEMU via Homebrew

Install QEMU via Homebrew, an open-source machine emulator and virtualizer. You can also contribute to UTM on its GitHub page.

Step 5: Download and Install the Latest UTM Version

There are two options to install UTM on your machine. The first option is downloading it directly from the official website. Alternatively, you can download it from the App Store version, which offers automatic updates.

This demonstration was performed on a system with the following specifications:

* Storage: 512 GB (approximately 305 GB free storage while performing the demonstration)

* Total Number of Cores: 8 (6 performance and 2 efficiencies)

* OS Platform and Distribution: macOS Monterey (12.2.1)

Power BI is one of the most well-known business intelligence tools that allow you to connect and visualize any data from various input sources such as spreadsheets, databases, etc. Unfortunately, Power BI itself supports only Microsoft Windows operating system.
